Athletes and Pizza

My good friends Andy and Daemon are representing California Swim Run this May, they are training for the Utö SwimRun race on May 29th.  The race is held just off the cost of Stockholm, Sweden and covers 45k of swimming and running.  These seasoned athletes don’t eat pizza everyday but they realize that athletes can eat pizza and still perform at a high level

At Pacific Pizza, we use a thin crust with quality ingredients that won’t leave you feeling uncomfortably full.  We want you to enjoy your pizza weather you are at a brewery, beer festival, birthday party or other private event.

We hand toss all of our pizzas and stretch the dough just right so you get a crispy crust which will hold up under it’s own weight.  So no matter what your sport, pizza can still be a treat to enjoy from time to time.

Cheers,

Sean Durkin

Pacific Pizza Giving Back to the Ocean

Surfrider Thank You Pizza

Back in March, we helped out with a Surfrider Foundation fundraiser by donating wood fired pizza to the event Samples by the Sea.  Mandy, Hallie and her team were nice enough to send this wonderful note to thank us for donating pizza to their event.

Sean and his pizza makers are all involved in the sport of rowing so, it was great to give back to an organization which works to make sure that our bays and oceans are clean and available for everyone to enjoy!

Eagle River Pizza to Pacific Pizza

Pizza Beginnings

It’s been almost two years since we officially started Eagle River Pizza in Avon, Colorado which later became Pacific Pizza in San Diego.  I wanted to reflect on some of the parties we’ve enjoyed and things we’ve learned since starting the business.

The Start of Great Pizza in Avon

We started building the pizza trailer in April of 2013 just after the close of the season at Beaver Creek Ski Resort.  Here is the quick vision that I had for the trailer:

Here is the trailer that I actually started building:

First Event

With two days to go until our first event, we eagerly fired up the oven for the first time and prepared all the items needed for feeding hundreds of hungry cyclists from Ride the Rockies.

First Pizza Event

We were overwhelmed by the popularity of our pizza at the first event but, with some friends, a little ingenuity and smiles, we hustled our way to feeding hundreds of cyclists along with their friends and families.  Now that we knew the oven worked and people liked our pizza, it was time to start a fun summer in Colorado with many large events.

Thanks to my friends from Turtle Bus for stepping in to help out on that first day!

Check out our next post for more on the summer of rodeos, airshows, town festivals and sporting events……

Your Party

Summer is coming and the weather is already beautiful.  If you are planning a summer party for your work, family reunion, birthday, wedding or any special event, consider having fresh wood fired pizza at your event.  I have heard time and again that people are tired of having tacos at their events and are looking for something new and different.

You can be sure that your guests will not forget your party when you have wood-fired pizza cooked fresh on site!

Pizza Making Party Tips

Recently we catered a fun baby shower  pizza party  in La Mesa.  Chris and I were making pizza for a group of 50 people and they were really enjoying the pizza.  The owners of the house were interested in putting in a wood fired pizza oven in their backyard so, we taught them some tips on how to make great pizzas.

Pizza Making Party

It was really fun to help the family make their own pizzas and show them how to cook the pizzas just right.

Pizza Oven

There are some tricks to spinning out the pizza dough balls like a pro but anyone can learn quickly.  We always bring extra dough so our guests can try a few times and get the toss just right.

Pizza Toss

If you’ve always wanted to learn how to make pizzas at home but, with a little flair, just let us know.  It can be frustrating to get the dough just right on your own but, with some tricks, you can be on your way to a great pizza.

Here are our tips to getting the crust just right.

  1. Flour is your friend; keep adding a bit of flour to your dough as you stretch it out.
  2. Begin by loosening up the edges and working them first and then stretching the middle.
  3. Use gravity as your ally, when the dough is just right, gravity will pull your dough and help you.  If your dough is just a little too soft, support the dough and don’t let gravity over stretch the dough.
  4. Make sure your surfaces are free from moisture and clean.
  5. Enjoy yourself and always have extra dough, if you make a hole, it’s not the end of the world.

For the best transfer and cooking, keep it light.  I usually limit pizzas to three toppings and use light sauce and cheese.  Stay away from the “Spruce Goose”

Have fun with your pizzas and share them with your friends!

Surfrider Foundation Fundraiser

Surfrider Foundation Fundraiser

The Surfrider Foundation raised over $5,000 in one afternoon, thanks to the hard work of many people who volunteered their time and resources.  If you are interested in helping out, there is so much you can do for our beautiful oceans.  Check out the Surfrider calendar of events to see what is going on in your area.

Here is the history of the Surfrider Foundation:

Thirty years ago a group of surfers from Malibu, California, were concerned about the health risks associated with environmental threats posed by escalating coastal development at their favorite surf spot. They took action. Not even they could have envisioned the history they were making when they succeeded in protecting their beloved surf spot.

Since its inception in 1984, the Surfrider Foundation has evolved into one of the largest non-profit grassroots organizations with a volunteer-activist network dedicated to its mission to protect and enjoy the world’s oceans, waves and beaches.

Today, the Surfrider Foundation is measurably stronger, with more force and movement than ever before. It has 84 chapters, including 30 high school and college clubs, and more than 250,000 supporters, volunteers and activists fighting 90 active campaigns around the country. Armed with a model to defend the coast, the organization has a record of 292 victories (and counting)since 2006.

Filled with times of uncertainty, it hasn’t been easy. The Surfrider Foundation’s long-term success and growth is a tribute to its founders vision, that taking on an environmental battle may not be easy, but with constant pressure, endlessly applied, it can be won. And the key to this is what makes the organization unique…

We were happy to partner with the Surfrider Foundation, their friendly staff of volunteers were upbeat and wanted to make it a fun time for all involved, well done!

Friends, Giving Back, Exercise and….Pizza the Keys to a Happy Long Life!

People are always searching the keys to happiness and a longer life.  At my rowing club, there is a well know athlete in the club named Dodd Wragg; he rows just about every day and is know for his curly white moustache and his smile.  Dodd is 81 years old and was part of the winning 2015 US Rowing Masters Nationals Team from the San Diego Rowing Club.

So what are the keys to a long happy life?  Looking at Dodd’s life, I’d say that surrounding yourself with good friends, exercising daily, helping others, giving back to your community, being friendly and…..enjoying pizza are some of the things that will lead to longevity and happiness.

If you are interested in trying rowing, contact Rowing Director Chris Callahan to find out more.  No matter you age or experience level, there is a place for you at the San Diego Rowing Club.

The Surfrider foundation has many ways to help you help keep our fantastic oceans and beaches clean and enjoyable for our future generations.  Contact Mandy Sackett, the San Diego Chapter Manager for more info or check out the Surfrider website.

Pacific Pizza was part of a large group of local businesses including Xterra Wetsuits, Helix Brewing, Duck Foot Brewing, We Olive and many more which supported the Samples for the Sea event on February 28th.  We had over 90 people come and enjoy a beautiful day on Mission Bay while supporting a great cause.

Pacific Pizza is always looking for ways to give back and help the local community.  If you are looking to host a fundraiser or just a fun party, we can help by catering the whole event and cooking wood-fired pizza at your location.  Contact us and we’ll help make your party one that people will be talking about for years.

Making Your Own Oven

Over the years, I’ve had many questions about how I built my oven from people who want a wood-fired pizza oven in their backyard.  It was a lot of fun building the pizza oven and I’ve had a lot of great parties so I’m happy to help you throw your own pizza oven with mine or yours.

For all the free information you’ll every need on throwing a pizza party in San Diego, check out the Forno Bravo forum on the Forno Bravo website.

Wood Fired Pizza Party

Real Wisconsin Cheese

This past weekend, my friends and I left San Diego and headed to Wisconsin…..in February!  We were out to race in the Birkiebeiner Cross Country Ski Race.  As usual, I was scoping out the pizza places and on this trip, I had the opportunity to sample a lot of different kind of cheeses.  We visited the Burnett Cheese Co-Op and had fried cheese curds, flavored cheese curds, whips of cheese  and some delicious milk shakes.

We had a great time racing but didn’t find any amazing pizza on the trip….the search continues.  It’s good to be back in San Diego and enjoying all the delicious pizza we have here.

Classic Margherita Pizza Story

Have you ever wondered where the Margherita pizza gets it’s name?  Yesterday, I spoke with an older Italian man and he gave me the scoop.

Pizza Margherita

Pizza Margherita is to many the true Italian flag.

According to popular tradition, in 1889, 28 years after the unification of Italy, during a visit to Naples of Queen Margherita of Savoy, wife of King Umberto I, chef Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi and his wife created  a pizza resembling the colors of the Italian flag, red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil). They named it after the Queen – Pizza Margherita.
